While engaged in operations in Afghanistan in 2008, Elton performed his song What A Soldier Left Behind with Canada\u2019s beloved rock band Blue Rodeo and the rest is history. He released his first rock album in March 2009 and most of the songs on the album were written in Afghanistan. In addition to having his songs chart on various internet radio stations, Elton has received numerous awards for his music contributions to raising awareness for troops with PTSD, including the Queen\u2019s Diamond Jubilee medal, and the Chief of the Defense Commendation. He began rapping in 2010 and in 2013 he self-published music online through SoundCloud. JD Mike started performing for audiences around 2016, participating in multiple Rap Battles in his community. In 2017, JD Mike went to Nunavut Hitmakerz workshop in Pond Inlet and was inspired to start writing and recording music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">JD Mike and his brother performed their original song, \u201cDreams To Reach\u201d, at the local Nasivvik high school for a Suicide Prevention Walk. He believes that songwriting has helped him learn to express himself through music in a safe, healthy way. His songs include a wide range of authentic human emotions and address mental health with imagery of being lost in the dark and wanting to get out. JD Mike hopes that through listening to his songs, fans will understand some of the challenges he and other Inuit face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">In both 2021 and 2022, JD Mike won first place in Embrace Life Council\u2019s Talent Show events. JD Mike planned to feature on the second <em>Ajungi<\/em> album, but the project was cancelled due to the pandemic. In 2022, he graduated from the Ajungi Mentorship Program, created by Hitmakerz and sponsored by FACTOR (the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings).<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">JD Mike is now officially launching his career in the music industry. He travelled to Iqaluit, Nunavut in September 2022 to work on recording his original songs with Ottawa-based producer, Tev Bourque of Tev Sound (Brenda Montana, Birdie Whyte, John Carroll, Amanda Lowe). In October 2023, JD Mike released his debut EP <em>Rising Star<\/em> on multiple platforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">In addition to rapping and performing, JD Mike is also passionate about songwriting and beatmaking. The 11-track album was released across<a href=\"https:\/\/hitmakerz.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ef11368acdba69e59cff6eac&amp;id=586736dcb4&amp;e=ba8be8bdd6\">\u00a0streaming platforms<\/a> on August 25, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The creation of <em>Final Legacy<\/em> was inspired during Ehski\u2019s time in the <a href=\"https:\/\/hitmakerz.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ef11368acdba69e59cff6eac&amp;id=c5f4cffc75&amp;e=ba8be8bdd6\">2021-2022 Ajungi Mentorship Program<\/a>, created by Iqaluit-based record label, Hitmakerz, and sponsored by FACTOR. Going into the mentorship, Ehski had songs ready to record, but the program gave him the tools to make the album a reality. He received one-on-one mentoring sessions about performance skills, production, music business, entertainment law, and marketing before recording his album in October 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Ehski mixes gritty hip hop beats with honest lyrics about resilience, his community, and his own life story. His lyrics are written in both English and Inuktitut. The album aims to remind people that everyone faces challenges \u2013 <em>and<\/em> everyone can overcome them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want people to know they\u2019re not alone. I am also here fighting against my problems,\u201d said Ehski. \u201cI want them to know that they\u2019re not alone: they can speak with their friends, trusted family, or even a stranger that is willing to listen such as a therapist, counselor, psychologist, or a doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Final Legacy<\/em> was produced by Tev Bourque of Tev Sound (Brenda Montana, Birdie Whyte, John Carroll) and was recorded at Bourque\u2019s studio in Ottawa. It includes features from Thor Simonsen and Shauna Seeteenak. The album was released through Hitmakerz and distributed by CD Baby. Financial support was provided by the Government of Nunavut.<\/p>\n<p>While <em>Final Legacy<\/em> is Ehski\u2019s first album, his original song \u201cInuurama (I Am a Person)\u201d was previously featured on the 2019 Ajungi compilation album. In 2018, he opened for his late cousin and JUNO-nominated artist, Kelly Fraser, at a performance.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, Ehski started making music at 13 years old. He comes from a Christian family, where many of his relatives sing gospel, but he\u2019s the first of his family to rap.\u00a0 When Ehski was 16 years old, he went to Young Offenders in Iqaluit. There, he began writing poems and lyrics as a way to stay busy and support his emotional wellbeing. It was also through writing lyrics that Ehski improved his English.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Music] helps me mentally, spiritually, emotionally, where it can lead me somewhere physically that is destined for me,\u201d said Ehski.<\/p>\n<p><em>Final Legacy<\/em> is available to <a href=\"https:\/\/hitmakerz.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ef11368acdba69e59cff6eac&amp;id=cdcd0290b6&amp;e=ba8be8bdd6\">stream now<\/a> across platforms. Hailing from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, the pop singer-songwriter and TikTok influencer is a proud Inuk who often pays homage to her culture through her work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\">Montana grew up on music, learning singing, throat singing, piano, guitar, and ukulele throughout her childhood and teenage years. She began as a singer-songwriter in 2018, inspired by years of watching her late Uncle Ken sing and play guitar at family events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\">In 2020, Montana joined the generation of internet music influencers by posting singing and comedy videos on TikTok under the username @inuksuk. Today, she has made a name for herself on the app, currently boasting over 120K followers and over 2M likes across videos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\">Despite extreme adversity at a young age, Montana has always moved forward, continuously promoting a message of hope and love in her music. Her debut album, <em>Qaujimagit<\/em>, set to release in August 2022, is a collection of songs \u2013 some in Inuktitut and some in English \u2013 that Montana wrote for the loved ones in her life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\">Her music sends a message to her friends, family, and community at large: \u201cThere are people who care for you and you are not alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\">Montana continues to connect with her growing fan base, creating a friendly, welcoming place to share her music and stories. He began rapping in 2010 and in 2013 he self-published music online through SoundCloud. JD Mike started performing for audiences around 2016, participating in multiple Rap Battles in his community. In 2017, JD Mike went to Nunavut Hitmakerz workshop in Pond Inlet and was inspired to start writing and recording music.<\/p> <p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">JD Mike and his brother performed their original song, \u201cDreams To Reach\u201d, at the local Nasivvik high school for a Suicide Prevention Walk. He believes that songwriting has helped him learn to express himself through music in a safe, healthy way. His songs include a wide range of authentic human emotions and address mental health with imagery of being lost in the dark and wanting to get out. JD Mike hopes that through listening to his songs, fans will understand some of the challenges he and other Inuit face.<\/p> <p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">In both 2021 and 2022, JD Mike won first place in Embrace Life Council\u2019s Talent Show events.
